THE INSTRUCTOR

INSTRUCTOR IS A TITLE OF HONOR

Traditional martial arts are a rich lineage of history. Traditional martial arts are rooted in the concept of "family". The relationships of the traditional martial arts family are very respectful. Master is a title of the highest honor and respect earned by the individual who achieves a high level of skill in the martial arts, lives with the highest moral standards and is balanced mentally and physically. Master is a title that should not be misused or abused in any manner.

In ancient Korean culture masters were very cautious to teach because the nature of martial arts skills contains harming skill that may cause damage to others. Traditionally most techniques were passed down to family members for protection and improvement of mental and physical health. If an individual wanted to study with master, it required a great deal of effort to be accepted. However if master accepted an individual, this person was treated as a family member. The Korean word for master is "sa boo nim" and is used without adding the master's family name with it. The literal English translation is sa (teaching), boo (father) and nim (sir). If a student refers to their master by their name it is considered disrespectful.

Instructor is a title of high honor. The journey of martial arts is a special one. It requires years of dedication. Martial arts develop the mind, body and spirit. As a result of this dedication the student learns to live a sincere and serious life and become a good life practitioner.  Master is the root of traditional martial arts.  Disciples and instructors become the branches.  Master teaches that the journey of martial arts starts with the white belt level, but we do not truly begin our journey until black belt. Once the student reaches instructor level, then the student starts to truly understand the true teachings of traditional martial arts. An instructor of Chun Seung Won is a tremendous responsibility. The instructor becomes a representative of the teachings and traditions that Chun Seung Won teaches and preserves.
